What Bearded Dragons Can Not Eat

Your bearded dragon is basically a tiny dinosaur with attitude. You love feeding it. But hold up! Some foods are total game-overs for your scaly buddy.

Think of their stomach as a picky toddler who also happens to have a spiky beard. They can't exactly spit out a bad meal. So it falls on you to be the smart one.

Let's dive into the nope list. Your beardie will thank you later. Well… it won't say anything, but you get the idea.

1. Rhubarb Leaves

Free rhubarb for your dragon? Hard pass. Rhubarb leaves are loaded with oxalic acid and an evil compound called anthraquinone glycosides.

These substances shred your dragon's digestive system. We're talking serious trouble if they nibble even a little. Skip this one entirely.

Fun fact: rhubarb is technically a vegetable, even though people bake pies with it. Weird, right?

2. Poison Ivy & Chilli Plants

Your beardie looks cute outdoors. That's the trap. Poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac are absolute nightmares for tiny lizards.

Even worse? Chilli plants. A reptile eating hot peppers is like you accidentally putting a firecracker in your mouth. No thanks.

The spiciness isn't even the worst part. The chemicals in these plants can cause swelling, burns, and far worse.

3. Spinach, Beet Greens & Chard

Here's a surprise. Spinach sounds healthy for everyone. But for bearded dragons, it's actually a double-edged sword.

These leafy greens contain oxalic acids. That acid binds with calcium and strips it away. Less calcium means softer, weaker bones.

Your dragon needs strong bones to carry that cool beard around. Toss the spinach salad and try collard greens instead.

4. Iceberg Lettuce

Most reptile owners don't realize this. Iceberg lettuce is basically just crunchy water. It's about 96% water and almost zero nutrients.

Worse yet, it can cause diarrhea in beardies. Your dragon doesn't enjoy that. You don't enjoy cleaning it either.

Swap it for romaine or mustard greens. Your lizard will munch happily and actually get nutrition from the meal.

5. Fireflies & Butterflies

Okay, this one is bizarre but true. Fireflies contain a toxic compound called lucibufagins.

If a firefly accidentally flies into your dragon's tank game? Instant danger. Even one firefly can poison a smaller reptile.

Butterflies and moths also aren't hall passes. Their wings sometimes dust your dragon with toxic scales. Stick to crickets and dubia roaches.

6. Avocados

You love your avocado toast. Your dragon doesn't. Avocados contain a toxic compound called persin.

Persin can trigger heart issues, liver damage, and nasty GI upsets in smaller animals. One guac bite is enough to cause alarm.

Plus the high fat content clogs your dragon's system. No, not even a chip of guacamole. Zero percent.

7. Rhubarb — Wait, We Already Said That!

Just kidding. Let's end on a spicy note.

Any citrus fruit, like oranges and lemons, is a big nope. The citric acid and oils irritate reptile bodies.

The acid turns your dragon's mouth into a stinging zone. A sad beardie is a not-so-happy beardie.

Your dragon trusts you to keep weird stuff away. That's kind of the point of being a reptile parent. Feed them right and you'll share a long, happy life together.
